Mainland comments on Taiwan leader's speeches involving cross-Straits relations as duplicity doomed to failure

In response to a question concerning that Taiwan region's leader delivered a speech today marking the first anniversary of assuming office and gave interviews to media after the speech, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, stated that "Taiwan independence" activities are utterly incompatible with peace in the Straits, and that confrontation runs counter to dialogue and communication.
"Only by ceasing provocative actions aimed at seeking 'independence' can there be room for improvement in cross-Straits relations; strengthening exchanges and cooperation between both sides of the Straits can ease tensions; recognizing that both sides belong to one China lays the groundwork for cross-Straits negotiations and dialogues," Chen said.
"The recent speech by the Taiwan region's leader continues to stick to a 'Taiwan independence' separatist stance on one hand, while on the other, it feigns goodwill, claiming a willingness to engage in exchanges and cooperation with the mainland under the premise of 'equality and dignity.' Such duplicity is doomed to fail," Chen said.
"No matter what the Taiwan region's leader says or how they say it, they cannot change the status and fact that the island of Taiwan is a part of China, nor can it alter the direction and pace of progress in cross-Straits relations, let alone stop the historical trend toward ultimate reunification of the motherland, which is inevitable," he said.
"We will fully implement the overall strategy of the Communist Party of China in the new era for resolving the Taiwan question, adhere to the one-China principle and the 1992 Consensus, unite the vast majority of Taiwan compatriots, and resolutely oppose 'Taiwan independence' secessionism and interference by external forces."
"On the basis of the one-China principle, we are willing to engage in dialogue and communication with all political parties, groups, and individuals in the Taiwan region regarding political issues across the Straits and matters related to advancing the process of national reunification, actively expand cross-Straits exchanges and cooperation, continuously deepen cross-Straits integration and development, and work together to create a bright future for national reunification and the great rejuvenation of the nation," Chen said.
